LIFESTYLE, LEISURE, PLACES & HOME

Hello Fresh

I tried Hello Fresh as my friend, who swears by it, had a voucher for a free week which she gave me so I thought it would be good to give it a trial run. Due to it only being a one week trial I had to get whatever was sent to me and the meals, although reasonably tasty, weren’t going to set the world on fire. With having 2 teenagers at home who like different food to us it wouldn’t work that well for us at the moment but it may be something we try again when it’s just the 2 of us. My brother & sister-in-law swear by Gousto and many people prefer it to Hello Fresh so we may try it too to see what the difference is and if we prefer it.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Da Sandro Birchencliffe Huddersfield

This authentic Italian restaurant has been a staple in Huddersfield’s culinary world for many years & went through a big refurbishment a couple of years ago. I’ve eaten here many times & the food is always excellent. It’s a long-standing family run business & the staff are always friendly & inviting and make your visit an event rather than just a meal out. It’s very popular for birthdays & they are fabulous with children making it great for families. A wonderful restaurant that my family & I will continue to return to time & time again.

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH

Mini Egg Martini

  • 25g Cadbury's Mini Eggs (or your preferred brand of mini chocolate eggs)
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 25ml crème de cacao
  • 25ml Baileys
  • 50ml vodka
  • ice

Method

  • STEP 1

Crush the Mini Eggs in a pestle and mortar then tip onto a small plate. Brush the rim of a martini glass with a little of the honey using a pastry brush then dip the glass into the crushed Mini Eggs to stick them on. Pop the glass in the fridge until you need it.

  • STEP 2

Pour the crème de cacao, Baileys and vodka into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and shake until the outside of the shaker feels really cold. Strain into your prepared glass and serve.

FILM/TV SHOW OF THE MONTH

One Day

After a bit of a slow start in the first episode, I persevered and ended up loving this 14 part series based on the novel by David Nicholls.

I’ve not read the book or seen the original film but, most people who have, prefer them both. Without any preconceived ideas I quite enjoyed it and thought the performances, though not mind blowing, were watchable.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Kicking the Bucket List – Cathy Hopkins

I loved this book and its concept!

After reading their mother’s will, 3 estranged sisters are aghast to discover that their inheritance comes with strings attached. If they are to inherit her wealth, they must spend a series of weekends together over the course of a year and carry out their mother’s bucket list!!

Funny, poignant, thought provoking. This novel is witty and a real page turner. I can’t wait to read more of Cathy Hopkins novels.
