LIFE IN BEAUTY
FIRST MAKEUP & BEAUTY REGIMES
I started wearing makeup in my early teens (although as a
dancer I'd worn it from a very young age on stage) and I remember the very
first lipstick I had was Autumn Shimmer by Rimmel. As far as early makeup looks
go, I didn't do too badly and definitely didn't go for the shimmery blue &
green eyeshadows thank goodness. I've
always felt brown and neutral shades suited my eyes better preferring to go for
a brighter lip. I've obviously evolved and adapted this over the years, but the
basics have always stayed quite true to what I know suits me.
At high school we weren't allowed to wear much makeup, but I
did always wear eyeliner and mascara once I hit my teens, it's always been
important to me to look my best for as long as I can remember. My mum has
always worn makeup and loved good clothes, so I guess I followed her lead
really.
HOW I'VE LOOKED AFTER MY SKIN OVER THE YEARS
I was always told to cleanse, tone & moisturise and to
look after my skin as soon as puberty hit. I have never suffered badly with spots,
but I remember using the awful astringent Clearasil if I had a time of the
month break out.
At 16 I left home to go to Theatre School and lived with
lots of girls, so we all took tips from each other with skincare & beauty.
I do remember going through a baby lotion phase to take off makeup at one stage
as it was cheap.
As I started working as a professional dancer, I travelled
the world on cruise ships which had fabulous beauty salons and duty free gift
shops on board so I was introduced to higher quality brands and started using
Clinique on my face and I fell in love with Elemis face & body products
which I still use to this day.
I've always been lucky to have a good clear skin with very few problems apart from a little dehydration from time to time.
Once I returned home, I continued to look after my skin and
for my wedding I'd been introduced to Estee Lauder and loved their beauty &
makeup lines.
Unfortunately, as soon as I had Isabelle I got a bit lazy
with my skin care as I was always so pushed for time and exhausted being a
working new mum and I did start using facewipes which carried on right up to
having Max and him starting school. They're so drying for your skin and
terrible for the environment, so I made a conscious effort to get back into a
good skincare routine as I was approaching 40.
As soon as I hit 40, I was on a mission and I now really
look after my skin and I prefer to use the Elemis range although I do try many
other products too.
In my 20's I travelled extensively & I wasn't as good as
I should have been with SPF cream. Now I will only wear a factor 50 on my skin
and try hard not to let my face go in the sun.
MAKEUP MISTAKES
When I look back at photos of me as a teenager I don't
cringe too much really. I think as a dancer I was lucky to learn a lot about
makeup and also had my makeup done for me professionally for photo shoots which
taught me a lot.
My main cringe is my thick eyebrows and then overplucked
eyebrows a few years later. I now have them done professionally every 3 weeks
and I've made sure my daughter has had hers done professionally from the first
time they needed doing so she doesn't try to tackle them herself.
I definitely wore a bit too much blusher over the years but overall,
I don't think I did too badly.
HAIR MISTAKES
The perm of the 1980's was the downfall of all my generation.
What can I say?? It looked horrendous and ruined my hair!!!!
MY BEAUTY REGIME IN MY 40’S
I made lots of Bucket List goals when I turned 40 &
really looking after my skin and sticking to a good skin care regime was high
on my list.
I have pretty good skin for my age but obviously, as you
age, fine lines and wrinkles do start to appear. My skin can be quite dry at
times which is good as I don't suffer from breakouts, but it does lack moisture
at times.
Firstly, I've tried to drink much more water as good skin
starts from the inside out, and I do take vitamins to boost my immune system.
My mum & grandma always told me the importance of taking
my makeup off every night &, apart from a few mad nights out in my teenage
years when I may have forgotten, this is something I stick to religiously.
I now use Garnier Miscellar water to remove the makeup then I cleanse with Elemis Cleansing Balm. I love a spray toner and I change these from time to time, I'm currently using dermalogica spray toner which I like, then I moisturise with Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Cream.
I love getting facials and try to get one per month which I love,
and my skin feels amazing afterwards. I going to be booking in for another
HydraFacial soon as I found it wonderful for my skin.
I've recently bought an LED 5 in 1 facial massager which
I've been using most days and I have to say I'm already noticing a slight
difference with fine lines. it's also very relaxing to use plus I use a Gua Sha
for a few minutes every night before I get in bed.
THE BEST THING ABOUT AGEING
Obviously, we all wish we had the skin we had in our 20's
but, with age comes more experience and more memories!
I definitely spend more time on my skin than I did in my
20's & I'm also more confident in myself and don't suffer fools which gives
you a confidence in your look.
I know what suits me now but I'm still not afraid to try new
things. The only thing I wish is that I was as daring as I used to be with
fashion like I was in my 20's & 30's. This is something I'm going to change
this summer.
THE WORST THING ABOUT AGEING
Fine lines & wrinkles appearing and having to work much
harder to keep weight off!
ONE BEAUTY PRODUCT EVERYONE SHOULD OWN
Anything to do with beauty is a very personal thing
dependant on skin type, colouring, age etc etc but the one thing everyone
should own is an SPF and if they wear foundation one with an SPF in it.
THE BEAUTY PRODUCTS I SWEAR BY
THE MAKEUP PRODUCTS I SWEAR BY
Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation
THE HAIR PRODUCTS I SWEAR BY
TIGI Bed Head small talk hair volume styling cream
PERFUMES I SWEAR BY
Having worked on cruise ships I always had the latest
perfumes and it’s something I'm passionate about. I love to try new scents, but
I also have a few signature scents that I always have a bottle of including
Samsara by Guerlain (retro!!!) and Allure by Chanel.
I'm currently using Michael Kors Wonderlust & Jimmy Choo
BATH & SHOWER PRODUCTS I SWEAR BY
I adore Neoms range of Bath creams & oils for a luxurious bath and I have to have one of their candles lit. I also adore Lush bath bombs!
My go to shower gel in a morning is Elemis Sharp Shower
which feels amazing and really wakes you up. For an evening shower I use This
Works Deep Sleep Shower Gel.
A Neom or White Company candle is also an essential!
MY APPROACH TO LOOKING YOUR BEST IS
Looking after yourself from the inside out with the food you
eat and taking a supplement. Drinking lots of water is vital to hydrate your
skin and, the most important thing is CONFIDENCE!!
COSMETIC SURGERY?
I'll never say no to anything and lots of people I know have
tried Botox and love it. It’s something I'd definitely consider in the near future.
However, I can't stand to see people whose faces don't move because of it plus
it's not always the lines that age a person, it's the skin tone that sags as
you get older and Botox can't fix this so I certainly won’t go overboard with
it.
FITNESS REGIME
In my 20's my fitness regime was excellent plus I was a
professional dancer, so I had to be fit and have a good physique. In my 30's I
had my 2 children, but my figure went back after both of them.
Approaching my 40's I was determined to stay slim and not be 'fat & 40'!! but I did certainly notice the weight start to creep on.
I've been a bit hit and miss with my fitness these last 5
years due to time and being very busy at work but, during lockdown I worked out
every day and I now have a good fitness regime which I plan to stick to for the
long term.
I have a gym membership where I do my cardio & weights and I go to Hot Yoga every Friday which I
love. I also go on lots of dog walks. I feel so much better when I've worked
out and I have to keep this discipline now.
ALWAYS IN MY MAKEUP BAG & HANDBAG
I always carry my makeup bag everywhere with me and it
includes powder, blusher, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, lipliner and a cover up
so I can do regular touch ups throughout the day. Plus I won't leave home
without a perfume in my bag.
TOP FASHION TIP
Dress for you and what makes you feel & look your best,
don't be a slave to trends as 9 times out of 10 they won’t suit or flatter you.
Stick to classic looks that suit you in the days but don't be afraid to have a
bit of fun with your evening look. Plus, for me, I swear by heels to elongate
my legs and give me power and confidence!!!
