LIFESTYLE, LEISURE, PLACES & HOME

A day at Fountains Abbey

On a beautiful late summer day, just before the weather turned and storm Lilian decided to pay us a visit, my parents, Isabelle & I spent a wonderful day at the stunning Fountains Abbey.

Fountains Abbey is located approximately 3 miles south-west of Ripon in North Yorkshire near the village of Aldfield.

This stunning Abbey was founded in 1132 and operated for 407 years, becoming one of the wealthiest monasteries in England until its dissolution, by order of King Henry VIII in 1539.

Today it is owned by The National Trust & maintained by English Heritage.

The ruins of Fountains Abbey are some of the oldest in the country and are truly something to behold. We were blessed with beautiful weather, which is obviously preferable, but I would most definitely still visit on a less desirable day. Throughout the Summer & school holidays there are numerous activities for children & families which are in-keeping with the Abbeys history & stunning grounds and so are therefore both interesting & educational.

There is so much to see at Fountains Abbey that it truly feels like more than one attraction as it includes the magnificent Abbey itself, an elegant Georgian water garden, a richly decorated Victorian Church and a medieval deer park.

Prepare for a lot of walking and there is a steep gradient from the visitor centre to the estate, so it is not recommended for wheelchair or mobility vehicle users.

Dogs are allowed in all outdoor spaces provided they are kept on a short lead at all times.

There is a lovely restaurant at the visitor’s centre serving hot & cold food with indoor and outdoor seating. We found this to be reasonably priced with a good selection of food & drinks.

A visit to this stunning place is a beautiful day out which I highly recommend. I can’t wait to go back!

BEAUTY, HEALTH & STYLE

 Sober September

August was jam packed with lunches out, meals out, day trips, city breaks etc and I admit I over indulged a bit!!!!! Isn’t it obligatory to have a glass of rose in your hand if the sun’s out?!!!!!

Towards the end of August though I was ready to get back into a routine and a healthier diet and first stop was Sober September. It was such a busy work month I barely noticed it and I felt so much healthier and brighter by the end of it. A few alcohol-free weeks every so often is so good for the body & mind and I highly recommend it.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Manor House Lindley

This stunning venue is a huge favourite of mine but up to this Summer I’d only been for afternoon tea or morning coffee. So, what better place for Tony & I to go to for an evening meal for our 21st wedding anniversary?

From the minute we arrived the service and attention to detail was superb & the quality of the food was outstanding. The décor & ambience at this outstanding venue make the whole evening an extremely special experience & not just a meal out. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

FILM/TV SHOW OF THE MONTH

‘Emily in Paris’ Season 4

Yes it’s frothy & frivolous and doesn’t require any kind of deep though. It certainly won’t broaden your mind but, it’s easy to watch for a bit of escapism and is aesthetically stunning!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

You are a F*cking success! – Noor Hibbert

This book had good reviews & I like Noor when I listen to her on podcasts, so I was keen to read her most recent book. It was fine, I kept going to the end but, did I learn anything new? Did it say anything that hundreds of other self-development books haven’t said before? No & no!!

THIS MONTH I'M LOVING

Getting back into a really good daily & weekly routine

THIS MONTH I'M NOT LOVING

Someone crashed into mine & Belle’s cars whilst they were parked outside our house!!!! Belle’s is a right off & mine has a lot of damage. So annoying but luckily no one was hurt!!!!

1. Hot Yoga

2. Abbey Clancey’s ‘Exhibit A’ podcast

3. Strictly is back!!!

4. The National Trust

5. Celebrity Masterchef & GBBO are both back – Autumn TV is the best!
